Nice To Have But Not Necessary

To give you an idea of how this may look like, I’ve filled out the list of what I think is essential for my tiny house kitchen and what I could compromise on. Use this as a reference throughout the process if you need a pointer of where to go next!

Nice To Have But Not Necessary

  • Full-sized fridge

I like to plan our meals ahead and prefer to visit the supermarket once a week

  • Full-size pantry

I can't get enough storage! I love to have everything hidden away to keep the surfaces clear of toasters, kettles and so on.

  • Built-In Oven

I like to bake, however, not enough to where I would see the benefits of a full-sized oven.

  • 2 Hob Stove

I never use more than 2 at a time so the four would be more of a luxury!

  • Single Sink

It is still manageable when washing up dishes even when there is a pile to do.

Happy to scrub up dishes after meals.

Step 2: Kitchen Features

Let's face it; we want to get this space just right. Whether it's large enough for a Sunday roast, simple microwave dinners, or late-night snacking, let's consider what your tiny house kitchen needs. Let's Make Some Choices!

Handy tip: When considering your tiny home kitchen, use your routine to guide your decision-making, especially when you're struggling to make a decision.

Fridges

Fridge size is essential as it is a larger appliance to consider. If your household is more than two people, an apartment-style or full-size fridge will work great for you! Think about your eating habits to understand which fridge size works best for you. Are you always planning your meals and doing a weekly shop? Then a larger fridge with a big freezer will be just right. Do you love your takeout and shop throughout the week? Then an under bench/bar fridge will work great for you!

Oven & Stove

Now let's think about the oven & stove. Like the fridge, these appliances take up a decent amount of space in your tiny home kitchen, so taking some time to consider your best option will pay off in the long run!

Small Ovens

Occasional bakers and cooks can save space with a smaller oven. Smaller ovens don't compromise on functionality, and you'll value the extra room in your tiny house kitchen. These can be simple benchtop ovens you connect to an outlet and tuck away great within your cabinets. If you buy a high-quality benchtop oven they can be even capable of roasting a full rotisserie chicken or baking a pizza.

Built-In & Full-Size Ovens

Large families or entertainers who frequently cook large meals can opt for a built-in or full-size oven for the extra capacity. Great tiny house designs use a combined oven & stove or separate appliances combined in one cabinet. It's not only a space saver, but it keeps the cooking all in one spot.

Hobbs & Stovetops

As for stovetops, simply think about how often you are using more than two hobbs at a time. Like an oven, if your cooking demands the use of four hobbs, that's no problem! However, if you're like me and never have more than two things on the go at the same time, I'd opt for the extra bench space. To assure you’re making the right decision, try to intentionally cook only with two hobbs on your stove (if you have a 4 burner stove). You’ll quickly realize if you miss the extra cooking space or if you do just fine without it!

Pantry

We've got to store the food somewhere - cereal boxes, crackers, baking/cooking ingredients (flour, sugar, etc.). I like to think about the pantry before the rest of the cabinetry as it will hold the bulk of your tiny house kitchen necessities and appliances. We're on our way to a successful tiny home kitchen if you've got enough storage here for all those items!

I love my pantry space to be able to store all my dry foods and small appliances neatly out of sight. A combination of a pull-out pantry and extra cupboard space would work great for me. If you’re more of a minimalist in the kitchen, a simple mini pull-out pantry or spice drawer with some storage boxes will do just fine!

Handy Tip

Look through your pantry and think about which items you use all the time or what has been waiting to be used for months… To make the perfect test, temporarily relocate your pantry into a smaller kitchen cupboard: Every time you use anything from your pantry simply store this away in your “test pantry.” You’ll soon see how much space you actually use!

Sink

Great, so you've figured out a few of the space-intensive appliances in your tiny house kitchen. However, your last consideration would be the kitchen sink. Your bench space is precious for meal prepping, fruit bowls, toasters, or dirty dishes, so you’ll want to maximise it as much as possible. The tiny house size you are considering directly determines the sink size you’ll need. A smaller tiny house usually has fewer bench space, so a single sink will be a great option. If you’re looking for something a little bit bigger, the extra bench space will allow you to get a double sink.

Dishwasher

We all know cleaning up can be quite a task in the kitchen. Whether you like to hand-scrub all your dishes or prefer to pop them in the dishwasher and be done with it, think about what would work best for you. Personally, scrubbing up in the sink is no problem for me as I always seem to run out of clean dishes before the load is finished.

Other Appliances

So we made some decisions. Let's get into the smaller appliances that also require storage space in your tiny house kitchen…

Small appliances like coffee machines, blenders, kitchen aids, toasters, etc. can make your life easier and get you one step closer to that perfect meal!

To make sure that your favourite appliances have all the space they need, start by making a list. Find the five appliances you use the most and see if there are any you can live without. Once you’ve got your must-have appliances, figure out how much space they take up. If you’re like me, all I need is a coffee machine, toaster, mixer, stick blender & rice cooker. These will easily fit in a portion of the cupboard and the gained space can go towards items more important to me!

Let's Sum It Up

Remember, your current kitchen doesn't necessarily reflect your tiny house kitchen. Not every appliance, plate, bowl, or mug will make it to your tiny house. You may opt for stackable dishes and glasses or replace some of the bulker appliances with smaller and more space-efficient options. The amount of small appliances and dishes you will take into your tiny house helps you understand the storage you’ll need. If you love to have every tool ready at your disposal a tiny house kitchen with plenty of cupboards, drawers, or overhead storage is perfect for you.

I can't wait to see how your tiny house kitchen is shaping up. We’d love to know your kitchen must-haves, leave a comment below!
