  • Storage Sofa

I find these are such a great use of space. They can shape the living room with the added bonus of storage underneath!

  • Display Shelves

I'm a big fan of decorating, and this is step one for making a tiny house feel like home for me.

  • Pet Area

I adore my pets and probably spoil them too much. So following this trend, they will need their own comfy space.

  • TV

I like the ability to watch TV with friends and chill out on the sofa. However, more often that not, I'll enjoy watching a movie wrapped up in my duvet on my laptop or my phone.

  • Bookshelf

I love the idea of having a bookshelf styled perfectly, but it's not an absolutely necessity to complete my dream tiny home.

  • Fireplace

I have to admit there's no feeling like the warmth of a fire. Although a fire-place isn't a requirement for my tiny house, it doesn't get cold enough in Auckland, New Zealand to be beneficial.

Step 3: Living Room Features

Now you've made your decisions for your tiny home’s kitchen, let's dive into the living room. Whether this space is the social hub of the tiny house or an area to put your feet up at the end of the day, tiny homes can accommodate either with the right design.

Handy Tip: Keep your routine in mind to understand how this space needs to work around your lifestyle. This space could be a multi-use space or one specific to one purpose. Either way, a successful living room will accommodate your lifestyle. Keeping your routine handy will make this easy to see!

Before Getting Started…

Let's consider what you want out of your living room. Is this a relaxing space to unwind and chill out? An area where everyone comes together to chat with one another throughout the day? Or maybe there's the option for a temporary sleeping arrangement?

There is no one size fits all in especially in a tiny house. Tiny living is all about space-saving and efficiency. Ensuring each area aligns with your lifestyle is essential to be certain you have everything you need. Not every living room will have a TV and a couch. Make it your own! If you don't watch TV and want to hang up some paintings, let's make your living room accommodate them. My point is there is no criteria or checklist, so explore and get creative!

Furniture

Furniture will be the most permanent choice shaping your tiny home's living room. If you're a bookworm, a cosy reading nook with built-in accessible shelving for easy access might be the way to go. If you're into your movies and TV shows, you'll want furniture that supports the best viewing experience. Or, if you think you'd like to use this space to convert into a second bedroom now and then, think about multi-use furniture or day beds.

Below are some furniture options to consider for space efficiency and comfort.

Fireplaces

Tiny Homes are well known for being energy and heat-efficient as they are such small spaces. Fireplaces are a great option for heating your tiny home as they can add a beautiful atmosphere and really crank up the heat in colder climates. A fireplace can be an excellent cosy addition to your space.

TVs and Projectors

Although TVs are a staple item for living rooms, it doesn't mean you have to include them in your tiny house living room. There are many options in tiny homes, such as projectors which are great for not intruding on the area. For example, Laurin and Eujenne’s tiny house @haus_of_99 makes the most of their small tiny house design with a retractable projector tucked away during the day!

TVs will take up the wall and floor space depending on whether you have a supporting cabinet or a wall-hung setup. Consider your options around layout and furniture to support this. If you find yourself more often tucked up in bed watching Netflix on your laptop or phone consider whether a TV is really that essential. You might even opt for a TV for the bedroom and keep the living room open for other activities.

Bookshelves & Display Shelving

I'm all for organisation in tiny homes: bookshelves and display shelves are a great way to organise while showcasing some of your favourite items. These can be a great addition to your lounge space as they can make the room feel lived in and homey.

Bookshelves

Bookshelves are great for storing books, and they can offer so much more to your tiny home. I love the flexibility of bookshelves, as they can showcase personal style and add character to your tiny home!  I dream of having a bookcase that is beautifully styled and full of my favourite knick-knacks with a spot to read in the sun. Even if you're not a huge reader, bookshelves are great to divide spaces or create comfy nooks.

Dishplay Shelving

Display shelving is another great way to add your personal touch to a tiny home. We love display shelving for all sorts of things! Plants, photos, candles, clocks, sculptures, you name it! These are an excellent option for decorating your walls in double-height spaces.

Pet Area

As a part of the household, considering your pets' space in your tiny house living room is essential. Depending on what household pet you own, this will vary. Think about some things they might need in the lounge, perhaps a pet bed? Will there need to be storage for toys?

Write up a list in mind for your pal!

Electronics

If you're planning to include a TV in your living room, chances are speakers and gaming systems will work alongside this. These aren't so crucial in terms of your overall living room layout, but it's good to have an idea of where they might go rather than wondering where to put these items later on. After all, we're on our way to a successful tiny house living room if you've got space for all these items!

Other Points to Consider

I've jotted down some points for you to skim through when designing your tiny house lounge. It's great to have these in the back of your mind while considering how you want your living room to feel.

Indoor-Outdoor Flow

When designing your tiny house lounge, it's great to have an idea of how you want the overall space to feel. If you want a spacious design filled with light, consider larger windows that allow the indoors to open up to the outdoors. The use of large windows or tri/bi-folding doors is a top-notch idea to make your space feel larger than it is and take advantage of the outdoors!

Double-Height Space

A double-height space is one of the best design features to create a spacious, open and airy aesthetic. Incorporating a double-height space can be a real game-changer in tiny houses as it makes a small space feel so much bigger, making the most out of even a small footprint tiny house living room! The contrast of the usually low ceiling heights paired with a double-height space increases the effect to a maximum.

Let's Sum It Up

Remember, there is no one-size-fits-all for your tiny house living room! To get the most out of your tiny house, you'll want to make this space suit your own needs. The lounge is the best space to get creative and explore what works the best for your lifestyle.

If you find your routine revolves around eating and conversing at a dining table, you'll probably want to add this into your design. However, if you find you gravitate towards the couch and eat here, a dining table may not be the best use of space in your tiny house.

Your tiny home lounge should support your hobbies and interests! If you love doing crafts with your kids, make sure you've got a space for this here. If you need a comfy space to play your guitar, pull out a jigsaw puzzle, or play with your pet, make sure you include this

More often than not, spaces within your tiny home will be multi-functional rather than single-use. If you've decided to go for a larger design, you'll have more flexibility with your space. However, smaller designs will mean some functions will eventually merge. Incorporating a movable dining table into the lounge or using a kitchen island for dining is a great way to introduce space-saving through multi-functional furniture.
